HOW TO TRAVEL FROM AIRPORTS TO BUYUKADA
There are two airports in İstanbul:
(A1) Atatürk Airport: This international airport is the largest airport of Turkey and it is located very close to Bakırköy. It is on the European side of İstanbul. The airport is named after the founder of Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
(A2) Sabiha G Airport: This international airport is on the Anatolian side of İstanbul. The airport is named after the first Turkish female pilot, Sabiha Gökçen.
TRAVELING TO FERRY PORTS
In order to travel to Princess Islands, you have to first travel to ferry ports which have scheduled ferry trips to Princess Islands since the islands are in the middle of the sea. There are 3 kinds of sea vehicles that travel across Marmara sea to transport people from Mainland İstanbul to Princess Islands:
(SV1) Vapur, Traditional Cityline Ferries: These are big ferries that has been carrying passengers almost for a century now. There are Vapurs scheduled between Kabataş, Kadıköy, Bostancı and Büyükada.
(SV2) Mavi Marmara Motorboats: These are huge motorboats that can carry at least 200 passengers. They run more frequently than Vapurs. They are very comfortable. There are Mavi Marmara Motorboats scheduled between Kabataş, Bostancı and Büyükada.
(SV3) IDO Fast Ferry boats: These are FAST ferry boats that can travel much faster than other means of transportation. They run to Büyükada only during summer. There are IDO Fast Ferry boats scheduled between Bakırköy, Kabataş, Kadıköy, Bostancı and Büyükada.
(SV4) Prens Tur Motor boats: These are motor boats that travel between Kartal and Büyükada. The trip lasts only 15 minutes.
FERRY PORTS in Istanbul:
(FP1) Bakırköy Ferry Port: This ferry port is very close to (A1) Atatürk International Airport. You can travel from (A1) Atatürk International Airport to (FP1) Bakırköy Ferry Port either by taxi or airport shuttle. Since it is only 10 kilometers between these two locations, it only takes at most 10-15 Euros to travel by taxi. Once you are at Bakırköy Ferry Port, you can travel from Bakırköy to Kabataş, Bakırköy and Bostancı. There are only (SV3) IDO Fast Ferry boats running from Bakırköy.
(FP2) Kabataş Ferry Port:
This ferry port is very close to Taksim Square, heart of the İstanbul night life. If your flight lands to (A1) Atatürk International Airport, you can take an Airport Shuttle to Taksim. Then you can take a taxi cab from Taksim Square to Kabataş Ferry Port. It will only cost at most 5 Euros. You can also directly travel from (A1) Atatürk International Airport to (FP2) Kabataş Ferry Port either by taxi or Metro Public Transportation. Since it is only 30 kilometers between these two locations, it only takes at most 25 Euros to travel by taxi. Once you are at Kabataş Ferry Port, you can travel from Kabataş to Kadıköy, Bostancı and Büyükada. There are many means of transportation from (FP2) Kabataş Ferry Port. There are (SV1) Vapurs running from Kabataş to Büyükada, but they stop at all the islands. So it takes almost 1.5 hours to travel by (SV1) Vapur from Kabataş to Büyükada. There are (SV2) Mavi Marmara Motorboats that from Kabataş to Büyükada. They only stop at Heybeliada (2nd largest island) and it takes 1 hour to travel to Büyükada. During summer, there are (SV3) IDO Fast Ferry boats running between Kabataş and Büyükada. They take only 35 minutes. If you miss those, you can take (SV3) IDO Fast Ferry boats from Kabataş to Bostancı. They are scheduled pretty frequently. Once you are at Bostancı, then again there are many means of transportation from Bostancı to Büyükada.
(FP3) Kadıköy Ferry Port:
This ferry port is on the Anatolian side. Most of the (SV1) Vapurs running from Kabataş to Büyükada stop at Kadıköy Ferry Port. The Vapurs that stop by Kadıköy are scheduled very rarely. So if I were you, I wouldn’t plan my travel route through Kadıköy, if you don’t know İstanbul very well. But Kadıköy is a very lively crowded district full of shops and people.
(FP4) Bostancı Ferry Port:
This ferry port is on the Anatolian side and you can find many means of transportation from Bostancı to Büyükada. Once you are at Bostancı Ferry Port, you can travel by (SV1) Vapurs running from Bostancı to Büyükada, either direct ones or ones that stop on each island. Direct Vapurs take 30 minutes to travel from Bostancı to Büyükada. Others take almost one hour. There are also (SV2) Mavi Marmara Motorboats that from Bostancı to Büyükada. They only take 30 minutes to travel to Büyükada. During summer, there are (SV3) IDO Fast Ferry boats running between Bostancı and Büyükada. They take only 15 minutes.
(FP5) Kartal Ferry Port: This ferry port is on the Anatolian side and it is very close to Sabiha Gökçen Airport. The distance between Sabiha Gökçen Airport and Kartal Ferry Port is 16 kilometers. From Sabiha Gökçen Airport, you can either take a taxi cab to travel to Kartal Ferry Port or E-9 bus. Taxi cab would cost 20 Euros at most. Once you are at Kartal Ferry Port, you can travel by (SV4) Prens Tur Motor boats running from Kartal to Büyükada. They travel directly to Büyükada and they only take 15 minutes.

COMING TO ISTANBUL:
If you are looking for flights to Istanbul we recommend Orbitz. We can hold reservations for a short period while you can confirm flights. Please note that, if you are a foreign visitor, you must buy a visa sticker on arrival at the airport in Turkey before going through passport control. At the time of writing this costs £10 for a UK visitor, €15 for a European visitor and $20 for a US visitor, and must be paid in cash.
From Atatürk Airport take the Havaş shuttle bus to Bakırköy (cost 5TL summer 2012), then the IDO SeaBus to Bostancı (6.50TL), and then a ferry Bostancı to Büyükada Adalar (c.4-7TL depending on line and speed). Alternatively you can travel to Kabataş by taxi or by metro/tram, and then catch a direct ferry to Büyükada.
From Sabiha Gökçen Airport take a short taxi ride to Kartal or Maltepe, which offer ferries to the island.
